Subtropical Rowhouse

The Subtropical Rowhouse Project

The objective of this project was to develop a typology for Subtropical Queensland that can be widely adopted by the mass housing/developer market, delivery significant benefits in terms of market appeal, design quality, affordability, and sustainable living; it was a designed exploration of a contemporary compact dewelling type.

Via an intensive workshop process, design-led multi-disciplinary teams focused intensively on the problem over a short period, supported by technical advisors representing key consultants and stakeholders.  The design teams took a critical approach to identifying solutions, with prototypes being assessed against the pilot Green Star-Multi Unit Residential rating tool.

Key design strategies optimised orientation for passive solar design, day lighting and natural ventilation including ways of coaxing air movement out of low velocity conditions.
